ENGLISH VERSION

The Head Master of the Inayati Sufi Order - Pir Zia Inayat Khan

Pir Zia Inayat Khan (born January 1th, 1971, Novato, California) is a scholar and teacher of Sufism in the lineage of his grandfather, Hazrat Inayat Khan. He is president of the Sufi Order International and founder of Suluk Academy, a school of contemplative study with branches in the United States and Europe, as well as of the interspiritual institute Seven Pillars House of Wisdom. Now, as President of the Inayati Order, Pir Zia Inayat-Khan continues his grandfather’s work of catalyzing authentic spiritual development.

Zia Inayat Khan, Ph.D., was born in Novato, California, in 1971, and is the first son of Sufi teachers Pir Vilayat Inayat Khan and Taj Begum Inayat. Pir Vilayat made it clear to Zia at an early age that he wished him to take the mantle of his Sufi lineage as passed down from Hazrat Inayat Khan, and instructed him in meditation and spiritual retreat. Pir Zia was confirmed as spiritual successor to Pir Vilayat in 2000, and has served as head of the Sufi Order International, guiding Sufi communities in North and South America, Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and the South Pacific.

When Zia was thirteen, Pir Vilayat sent him to Dharamsala, India, to study under the auspices of his friend, His Holiness the Dalai Lama. Pir Zia received his BA in Persian Literature from the London School of Oriental and African Studies, and his MA and PhD in Religion from Duke University.

Pir Zia has lectured and taught extensively throughout the United States, Europe, and India on Sufism and its relevance to personal and collective transformation. Pir Zia has specialized in carrying forward and teaching the spiritual legacy of his grandfather, Hazrat Inayat Khan. Pir Zia’s writings and talks also focus on connecting the heritage of contemplative wisdom traditions with contemporary society, with an emphasis on responding to crucial ecological and social challenges.

His training in Sufism is in the classical Indian tradition of the Chishtiyya. With his father’s blessing, Zia undertook a period of seclusion at the Chishti Khanqah in Ahmedabad, India, and received spiritual transmission from Pir Rashid-ul-Hasan Jili Kalimi in Hyderabad. In 2000 Pir Vilayat held a turban-tying (dastar-bandi) ceremony in Delhi, initiating Zia to the rank of Pir and confirming him as his spiritual successor (Sajjada-nishin). Pir Vilayat passed away three years later—may God keep him.

He lives with his wife Pirani Sartaj and children Rasulan and Ravanbakhsh at the Abode of the Message in New Lebanon, New York, and at Fazal Manzil in Suresnes, France.
